Questions & Answers about the Furusato
mosaic Poster
Q: Where did the photos come
from?
A: Images are from the early
1900s through 2002:
- Family photo albums
- San
Pedro Bay Historical Society archives
- Digital photos taken at the 2002 Picnic, Memorial Monument Dedication,
Golf tournament and New Year’s Party
- Frames captured from Orangewood Production’s video interviews at the
Memorial Monument Dedication
- One-time use cameras handed out at the Picnic, Memorial Monument
Dedication, and the Dedication lunch
Q: How was the mosaic created?
A: Yukio Tatsumi created the
Furusato characters which were scanned and stored on a computer.
Over 3000 photos and images were organized in a database after they were
either scanned or copied from digital cameras. Hundreds of these
photos were manually edited, cropped and cleaned. Special software was
then used to organize the photos to outline the Furusato artwork Mr.
Tatsumi had created.
Q: Where is the photo(s) I
submitted?
A: More than 3000 images
were collected and organized. From this number, 1290 were required for
the final poster. Family photo albums were given the highest priority, but
the ultimate selection of photos was automated and the software determined
which photos were required to shape the Furusato character.
Q: Is it too late to submit
photos?
A: While the poster is
completed, the documentary being produced by Orangewood Productions, LLC is
still looking for family photos, films and mementos from Terminal Island.
Please contact
admin@terminalisland.org or call
310-228-6249 for more information.
Q: How many posters can I have?
A: The California Civil
Liberties Public Education Program (CCLPEP) has underwritten the cost of the
posters for Terminal Island residents and their families through June 30,
2003. Posters were distributed free at the 2003 New Year’s Party
and at the 2003 Picnic. There are enough posters for 1 per household –
so that the children and grandchildren of Terminal Island residents can
share these memories. Posters must be picked up in person.
